When we first inspected this roof, it was in serious decline.
The surface was heavily infested with moss and lichen, the original coating had broken down and oxidised, and years of grime and contamination were trapping moisture against the steel. Left untreated, this is exactly how good roofs end up becoming rusted, leaking, and prematurely needing replacement.
You can see from the before photos the scale of the problem:
